Building Begins with Listening
Recently, the Cardea Homes team spent time at Good Shepherd Ministries, not in a boardroom or behind drawings, but on the ground. We were serving meals, packing lunches, helping with meal prep, and taking the time to better understand the community connected to this important place.
Our team has been working alongside Good Shepherd on a project to thoughtfully transform part of their Toronto landmark location into a dedicated medical clinic, in partnership with the Order of Malta. The clinic is being designed to expand access to essential healthcare services for individuals who may otherwise face barriers to care, bringing compassionate, community-based support directly into a space people already trust.
As we prepare for the upcoming medical clinic project in partnership with the Order of Malta, it felt essential to be present in a different way. Not just to see the space, but to spend time with the people whose lives are shaped by it every day.
What stood out wasn’t just the scale of the work being done, but the humanity within it. The conversations. The shared moments. The quiet resilience and openness of those we met. It was a reminder that the spaces we build are only as meaningful as the lives they support.
We’re grateful to the team at Good Shepherd for welcoming us so openly, and to everyone who shared part of their story with us. Experiences like this ground our work in something deeper than construction… they shape how we think, how we design, and how we show up.

We also feel incredibly fortunate to be part of the Good Shepherd renovation project alongside the Order of Malta. It’s work we don’t take lightly, and a responsibility we’re proud to carry forward.
As we continue this project, we’re reflecting on how we show up beyond the build itself. Supporting organizations like Good Shepherd isn’t separate from what we do; it’s part of it. It’s something we’re actively thinking about as we evolve how we share “who we support” through our work and our platform.
Because at the end of the day, building doesn’t start with plans.
It starts with listening.
About the Organizations We’re Proud to Support
Good Shepherd Ministries is a Toronto-based organization dedicated to supporting individuals experiencing homelessness, poverty, and complex challenges. Through meal programs, shelter, health services, and community outreach, their work meets immediate needs while creating pathways toward stability and dignity.
The Order of Malta is a global humanitarian organization with a long-standing mission to care for the sick and the poor. Through medical, social, and relief efforts around the world, they focus on preserving human dignity and providing compassionate, hands-on support to those most in need.
A Reflection of Cardea Values
Our time at Good Shepherd and our partnership with the Order of Malta are a direct reflection of what we believe at Cardea Homes.
We believe in showing up and following through. If we say we’re going to do something, we do it. That applies not only to the homes we build, but to the communities we’re part of.
We believe in leading with love, kindness, and compassion. Spending time in spaces like Good Shepherd reinforces that people—not projects—are always at the center of our work.
We believe that architecture is part of the fabric of a community. Every space tells a story, and it’s our responsibility to ensure that story reflects care, dignity, and intention.
And we believe that building better goes beyond materials and design. It’s about creating environments—whether homes or community spaces that support well-being, health, and a better quality of life.
Because at Cardea, this isn’t separate from what we do.
It is what we do.
Cardea Homes.
Building wellness into everyday living, and into the communities we’re proud to support.\
